A revised and expanded version of Brereton’s well-known A History of Modern Trinidad, first published in 1985. In this new edition, Tobago is now included; hence, the change in dates covered extends backwards to 1763, when the union with Trinidad takes place, but, like the original edition, the examination goes to 1962, the time of national Independence. A particular feature of this new edition is a greatly expanded bibliography reflecting the huge amount of research and writing that have taken place in the intervening 40-plus years.
Bridget Brereton is Professor Emerita of History, The University of the West Indies. Among her other published works are Race Relations in Colonial Trinidad 1870-1900 and Law, Justice &Empire: The Colonial Career of John Gorrie, 1829-1892.
